On June 21st, the Defence Secretary Robert Gates confirmed that the previous day the Pentagon suffered a digital intrusion into a US Defence Department mail server, prompting authorities to take 1500computers offline.

Gates declared that "Elements of the OSD (Office of the Secretary of Defense) unclassified email system were taken offline yesterday afternoon due to a detected penetration," also adding that "A variety of precautionary measures are being taken. We expect the system to be online again very soon."

According to Heise security,  the Pentagon spokesman assured that all the information contained into the jeopardized mail server were not confidential, and he pointed out that  Pentagon’s security system can count on a large amount of protections in order to guarantee that operations and missions will not be endangered.

Mr. Gates also said that the Pentagon is constantly under attacks and he could not explain why this specific  attempt had been so effective. A formal investigation has been opened upon this case.
