B'nai Brith accuses Canadian website of promoting racial hate PDF Print E-mail

The Canadian branch of B’nai Brith  (in Hebrew: Sons of the Covenant),  the oldest continually-operating Jews Service organization in the world, has recently filed a human-rights complaint denouncing a Victoria-based website and all its managing staff of contributing to the promotion of hate “affecting persons identifiable as Jews and/or as citizens of Israel”.

To the publisher Alan Rycroft was imposed to immediately remove from the web site Peace, Earth and News eighteen articles allegedly containing anti-Semitic material. O this proposal, an enquiry has been opened by  the Canadian Human Rights Commission.

Such eighteen articles- as well as many other articles on Pej.org – deal with war fares in the Middle East and with the conflict between Israeli and Palestinian governments. The tone of the articles is quite vehement and , for instance, a piece  entitled We Should Nuke Israel, “is an apparent spoof of a column in The Toronto Sun proposing a tactical strike on Iran's nuclear facilities.”

According to Miss.Anita Bomberg, legal representative of B’nai Brith Canada, these articles "are virulently anti-Israel to the point that they meet the criteria of crossing the line of legitimate criticism of the state straight into anti-Semitism."

Mr. Abrams, a Victoria businessman who is also member of B'nai Brith, is the one who first complained about the materials posted on Pej.org. He said that "there are a number of calumnies that need to be expose,” for example the idea that " Israel has no right to exist or that Israel is an apartheid state.”

The controversy between B'nai Brith and “Peace, Earth and News” is quite subtle, indeed Mr. Roycroft claimed that all the examples made by Mr. Abrams were quoted out of their original context so that the meaning could be misunderstood. Moreover he highlighted that such articles were critical against Israeli policies but there were no intention to express hatred toward Jews.

In a letter to Mr. Roycroft, the Canadian human Right commission says that they are required to “address any complaint that alleges a violation of the Canadian Human Rights Act,” the Canadian magazine The Globe and Mail reports .

On the other hand, Mr. Roycoft accepted to remove the articles until the issue will be over. "We removed all 18 articles ... named in the complaint within 24 hours as a courtesy to Harry Abrams and to show our goodwill. The 18 articles remain in our database and can be reactivated to public view at any time," he stated.

According to the Canadian human rights  Commission in case an agreement between the parties will not be reached, the case could be dismissed or referred to a human-rights tribunal for a hearing.

Mr. Abrams says that other Canadian web sites are under examination for publishing  possible anti-Semite contents.
