The Regional Southern Illinois University of Carbondale (SIUC) has just celebrated the end of 2007 Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition. This last edition of the Competition took place from February 23rd to 25th involving 5 teams of eight students each from the top network security programs in Illinois Universities.

Along with Southern Illinois University, teams from the University of Illinois, Illinois State University, DePaul University, and Moraine Valley College usually enter the competition.

According to SIUC website , “ Unlike many cyber security competitions this exercise concentrates on defense."

" The teams are not allowed to take the offensive. Instead SAVVIS Inc.  will be organizing a professional red team to perform attacks.”

Each team is provided with physically identical computer configurations at the start of the competition. Throughout the competition, the teams must ensure the systems supply the specified services while they are attacked by the “red team”.

In addition, the teams will have to satisfy periodic "injects" that simulate business activities.

"They're given a system and they are supposed to harden it.  At the same time they receive 'business inject.'  So they have to make sure that the business critical information is still working, everything is functioning, while they're under attack," says Belle Woodward of SIU's College of Applied Science & Arts.

The winning  team is the one  that best defends the given system while carrying out  all the tasks . The eight memebers of this edition will be invited to join the Midwest Regional Competition where they will compete against the winning teams from Minnesota , Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Ohio at the Center for Systems Security and Information Assurance at Moraine Valley Community College on March 16-18, 2007.

Regional winners will allowed to fight for the national title at the University of Texas at San Antonio on April 13-15, 2007.

In addition to the honour brought about entering similar competitions, winning teams members are often contacted by the FBI, Homeland Security or a number of international companies that are interested in hiring young and talented IT experts.
