Walking around in London could soon become problematic: it is not a matter of architectural barriers or physical checks , instead the problem is that a subtle and  invasive form of urban-perquisition is about to be adopted by British Government  to trap terror suspects: X- Rays.

Less than two weeks ago it was discussed the proposal to scatter “body scanners” in  streets, parks and public places in the UK. This means that each passer-by will be immortalized in a   “naked” picture  that is aimed to search illicit  weapons.

According to the British magazine The Sun,   the proposal was presented in January 17th by the Home Office  to PM Tony Blair’s working group on Security, Crime and Justice .

The document summarizing the legitimacy of a similar measure says: “detection of weapons and explosives will become easier” and says cameras could be deployed in street furniture.

It adds: “Some technologies used in airports have already been used as part of police operations looking for drugs and weapons in nightclubs. These and others could be developed for a much more widespread use in public spaces.“Street furniture could routinely house detection systems that would indicate the likely presence of a gun, for example.”The document also focuses on people’s reactions to he news of a similar initiative.

According to officials, the document says, one solution could be to allow only women to monitor female subjects but even  if this measure could work in single inspections, it would be inapplicable when checking crowded places.

The document says: “The social acceptability of routine intrusive detection measures and the operational response required in the event of an alarm are likely to be limiting factors."

British government “security plan” includes also the adoption of a number of technological systems such as Facial recognition systems to help track individuals’ movements, fingerprints scanners ,  millimetre wave imaging and THz imaging and spectroscopy –  used in airports to detect explosives an weapons in luggage and on people.

Data obtained through these checks will be then filed up in a huge database.
