An investigation has been recently demanded into a digital accident at Israeli Interior Ministry where the Israeli Vital Population Registry information  was leaked and posted on the Internet.

The database is compiled by officials at the Interior Ministry and it  includes information about all Israeli citizens and personal details that could potentially be used without authorization by Internet marketers, and of course cyber-criminals.

The case turns out to be particularly worth noticing because according to the Israeli radio station  Army Radio the downloadable data included particularly sensitive information, such as the addresses of senior government and security officials.

It is still unclear how the accident came about but the Ministry released an official statement on Monday saying that “it had passed the data on to the political parties running for the Knesset in the last election, in accordance with the law, and only then did the information show up in file sharing sites on-line.”

Why and How these data had been disclosed online is the object of a formal investigation, Head of the Interior Ministry Population Registry, Sassi Katzir, told Army Radio. Anyway, she  excludes the possibility that the leak was provoked by an employee of the Ministry.

No detail has been disclosed about the investigation and we don’t know whether the enquiry is addressed to some specific individuals. This secrecy is necessary, declared police officials, in order to protect… Israeli citizens’ privacy!
