Last blow to Internet freedom comes from one of the organizations that should preserve it: The United nation’s International Telecommunications Union (ITU) ... According to news agency Reuters the new head of the ITU, Hamadoun Toure, said that the internet should continue to be overseen by the ICANN and the ITU, rather than any new "superstructure."
The role of the ICANN, literally “Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers” is that of managing the domain name addressing system. The company has been strongly criticized because it was accused of reporting straight to the US Commerce Department, a government agency, which has extended ICANN’s control for at least three more years. Brazil, Cuba , Iran and several developing countries are the hardest opponents of the action of the ICANN. Mr. Toure declarations instead make clear that no opposition will come from the ITU: the president highlighted the importance of cooperation between separate agencies which should “come to a better cooperation... and avoid setting up a superstructure which would be very controversial and very difficult to put into effect”. ITU’s main concern in 2007 will be about tackling cyber security and narrowing the "digital divide" between rich and poor countries.
Good plan but.. Who cares about single users’ Privacy? Apparently the ITU does not
