Many similar initiatives have been organized all over the world with one common purpose: to reduce the risks of cyber attacks. Among the proposals that have been suggested during conferences sessions, most concerned free flow of information, freedom of expression, empowerment and access to knowledge, protecting users from spam, phishing and viruses while protecting privacy, cyber crime and protection of data. This last topic have been strongly debated, especially in Ottawa conference, and the conclusion is that since cyber crime is increasing faster than countermeasures implementation, companies and institutions have to find out appropriate and customized solutions to prevent criminals from accessing their databases. Well, this doesn’t seem to be such an amazing news.. Actually, the news is that some Canadian Security expert advised Government to start becoming aware that to beat crackers, they should use their methods themselves. This means that to protect a network, a good firewall is not enough, and since a leak would undoubtedly exist it would be better to discover it before than crackers. Maybe, this is no that discovery... but the fact that such a topic has been faced in an official occasion, represents a very important step for Internet Security.
According to the Ottawa Business journal , Brian O'Higgins, chief technology officer of local IT security firm Third Brigade Inc. explained that cyber criminals “often prowl around government networks to search for an area of vulnerability. When they find one, they like to take over the network, insert their own lines of code and use the data”, and he added that “government departments can save themselves a lot of headaches by investing in the services of an ethical hacker.” An ethical hacking approach seems to be the only way to face the problem from a proper point of view, but unfortunately in the world there is still too much confusion between the words “cracker” and “hacker”, and consequently this last term still conveys controversial reactions: first of all distrust. But just an expert of hacking techniques could anticipate a potential attack.. for example concentrating more on servers instead of individuals computers –but without neglecting these lasts-, or giving advice on which procedures and devices should be used to avoid that gateway would be opened in a closed network (..did you know that blackberry-like devices aren’t as safe as most people believe they are?..).
