We tried not to be too obvious in reporting about the AOL data breach, but here a comment is indeed necessary.

Yesterday Mr. Maureen Govern, the technology chief of AOL, resigned after two of his people have been fired from the company, as an effect of the data disclosure which, while thought anonymous, turned out to be quite not such....

Allegations to the two fired people are clear: "This incident took place because some employees did not exercise good judgment or review their proposal with our privacy team.

We are taking appropriate action with the employees who were responsible.";  and this means AOL has a clear and established policy regarding personal data management which have been allegedly violated without any possibility of control over the violation.  This comes after a real tough time for privacy related issues, in which we have seen a lot of privacy breaches related to several data disclosure on stolen/lost laptops and/or stolen data.

Only one consideration has to be made: while we consider that AOL is taking in proper consideration the issue, we do not see in news any reference to any similar action, taken by the companies that have been seeding laptops around the country....

So maybe they did not have a policy, or it's not considered so bad to disseminate associates' or customers' data......
