The devil is not always as bad as depicted.  In some cases the devil could also be your friend, in fact.  The reference is about the dropping of a lawsuit filing from the Music Majors against a cheerleader teacher in Palm Desert.  It happened that she was accused of downloading copyrighted music from the internet and refused to pay the fine.  Her lawyer (a clever one indeed, if not for else, for asking a security guy) argues against the filing that it is not possible to prove that, ....

if ever some music was downloaded, it was actually downloaded by the person accused.  After this, the major dropped the piracy case.  In fact, the point is good;  also because it is backed by the fact that an open wireless connection was present, meaning anybody could have downloaded the files from that IP.  So insecurity is becoming a good defense from allegations.  Also, this brings back a very old discussion about AAA (Authentication-Authorization-Accounting, pick your order).  The fact that the lawyer insists in is that it can be proved that a particular account was used for the connection, and that a particular IP was assigned and that IP was responsible for the music transfer. Nothing else could ever be proved. And that is actually a good point.

That's the problem when who files cases do not understand the difference between the 3 As. Unless they use biometrics for internet access from now on, we predict a hard time for majors, now that this could be cited in a court.
