Microsoft Internet Explorer version 7 PDF Print E-mail
User Rating: / 44
Thursday, 14 September 2006

The new Microsoft Internet Explorer version 7 is somehow trying to catch it's opponents - what should have been a reality years ago is now coming to life. The new RC1 version of the popular browser has become a more solid, faster, less buggy release than the previous one, with a real installation program and better RSS and CSS support. But is it worth installing? And more, is it any better than other already available browsers?

If you already have the beta 3 version installed, you won't immediately notice any changes. Microsoft has improved performance, stability, security, and application compatibility - all features that won't come out at first. The Redmond company has also added foreign-language support, and now provides an automatic removal of previous IE 7 builds.

That said, IE 7 RC1 still has that aftertaste of a program in development, which in the Zone-H's view won't disappear months after the final release, still expected sometime before the end of 2006.

Private surfing? No thanks... PDF Print E-mail

Had you have enough of “boring Internet Explorer look”? You might have to search for some extensions, shells etc...But beware, some of them are offering good looking interface and lot of functions, some more privacy and some a lot of adverts. But what is real and what is fake?

As the BBC reported on September, 1st another MSIE shell called Browzar was introduced in the web, offering private surfing. The official website states, that "you can search and surf the web without leaving any visible trace on the computer you are using".

The shell of Browzar has been designed to delete automatically all private information about your surfing, then it does not record visited websites, it does not store cached pages, moreover auto-completing is disabled and cookies are deleted at end of each  session. Besides,  it cannot  even patch flaws in IE - patch it yourself, we would like to say, this is finally something for user privacy.

But we will not. Why?

The reason is that it uses by default Browzar search engine, which feeds search results with sponsored adverts. This is nothing new, all search engines do it.

Sandboxie: Stay free of malwares PDF Print E-mail
User Rating: / 35
Thursday, 06 July 2006

Zone-H successfully tested a  software named Sandboxie that helps the users to prevent the attacks of digital malwares as virus, worms and trojans.

We used the  browser Internet Explorer v 6.0.3790.1830 to test the software,  and Sandboxie v 2.42 to verify if the software was actually capable of block ing any kind of attack attempt by some malware.

The download and installation of the software are sufficiently simple and  once installed, it creates a shortcut in the desktop  where browser can be initiated. When activated, the software  creates a folder in HDD:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\LOGIN\SANDBOX where all the information of configuration of the software and of the folder will be stored, as if it was something like a virtual HDD where cookies will be archived, together with the history of the websites, download files, temporary files and browser cache...

Nessus Win32: Ready for prime time? PDF Print E-mail

Monday, 12 June 2006

The long awaited Nessus v3 is now available for Win32. Zone-H had a first hand look, and feel a fair and honest review would be a nice feature for our readers. Nessus has always been the first choice in vulnerability scanning for many years [ at least for *nix systems ].

Support for Windows has been nearly non existent, save for a few attempts by a few individuals and a dedicated port by Cenzic based on the older GPL v2 license. With Tennable's  stance regarding distribution, source code availability and a "delay or pay" approach to plugin availability,  Nessus Direct Feed Subscription .

Apart from the licensing issues, we now focus on usability, features and scanning of the new Nessus for Win32...

Recently Zone-H have been playing with VOIP, specifically the SIP protocol which is powering everything from VOIP hardware phones, wifi and software based "softphones".

We were always searching for new utilities and tools and ran across a freeware VOIP security and protocol tester.

SiVuS provides a very robust platform to perform remote and local VOIP/SIP assessments.
